The study

A difference-in-differences (DiD) study of how the mass Telegram channel Trukha (truexanewsua, ~3M subscribers) covered Mykhailo Fedorov over six months, December 16, 2025 – June 16, 2026.

Bottom line

After mid-April 2026, Trukha's coverage of Fedorov turned distinctly more critical, more intense, and more sensational than its own coverage of a control politician (Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko) and than two size-comparable channels' coverage of Fedorov. The shift is in editorial posture, not in volume. It is concentrated on mobilization and territorial-recruitment-center (TCC) governance, a mobilization death, and a drone-procurement corruption story, and it sharpens sharply in early June. The two comparator channels did not make this turn; one of them, insiderUKR, ran consistently favorable Fedorov coverage in both periods.

The result is statistically supported and survives a stricter direct-mention test. It does not establish motive, coordination, payment, or editorial instruction. It also sits on top of an unavoidable real-world fact: Fedorov is the Defense Minister responsible for mobilization, and mobilization failures are legitimate accountability territory. The honest claim is about who turned, how hard, and on what, not about why.

One more finding cuts against a simple "successful attack" reading: the audience did not buy it. In the comment threads under Trukha's anti-Fedorov posts, almost no one blames Fedorov; the skepticism that does appear is aimed at Trukha — "who paid you?", "is this an FSB channel?" The frame was pushed but, so far, not absorbed.

Context: Fedorov is the Minister of Defense

For most of the window Fedorov is not the digital minister he is often remembered as. The Verkhovna Rada appointed him Minister of Defense on January 14, 2026 (replacing Denys Shmyhal) — inside the window and three months before the break date. That fact governs how the coverage should be read.

Across these six months, the comparator channel insiderUKR relays Fedorov acting as Defense Minister: the contract-service overhaul, the "єБали" performance-scoring system, Army-of-Drones results, Starlink verification, anti-drone netting, a "war plan," personnel reshuffles, and his appointment statement. This coverage is overwhelmingly supportive or neutral, and it is concentrated before the break.

So the "before" period is not routine digital-state news. It is relatively neutral coverage of a sitting Defense Minister's reforms. The post-break turn is therefore a move within his defense tenure: from covering his reforms to holding him personally responsible for mobilization, a death at a recruitment center, and procurement corruption.
